Objective
The objective was to create 3 unique and interesting beer labels for a brewing company to help promote their new craft beer flavours for a school project. The craft beer company was Tumbling Blocks (one that I made up) In addition to the beer labels the client wanted an ad created to help promote their new beer flavours that could be utilized in magazines.
Process
The process of creating the labels started with thumbnails and coming up with label ideas. I knew early on that I wanted a common theme to help tie all three beers together. I kept all possibilities open and had fun playing around with outlandish ideas. I finally decided to go with animals being a theme and knew that this idea could lead into multiple directions.

The semi-comps show one theme of sea, land and air animals versus the other theme of different types of sharks. One of the challenges was being tied between loving both label sets but in the end the sharks made more sense in bringing all the designs together.
One of the challenges was making the sharks look believable and that they were an accurate depiction of the animal. I solved this issue by finding stock images of the sharks that I wanted and outlined the outer shape of the animal. Once outlined I filled in the rest of the illustrations through image referencing and adding my own graphic style to the final designs. I decided to keep the backgrounds similar to not only have everything come together but to make sure that the sharks were the main focus on the labels.
It was a challenge to make sure that all the other typographical elements accurately fit on the label. This was achieved by playing around with the typography and warping it to fit on the correct angle to be readable. There was more adjusting when it came to mocking the labels up on the bottles and making everything look appropriate and readable to the consumer.

The next part of the job was to promote the new craft beer for the client through a magazine ad and I wanted this to be just as distinctive as the beer labels. The main challenge was to make the ad stand out from others when in the context of a magazine. I played with the theme of the labels and came up with two different ideas to help promote the beer. The personal problem was I liked both concepts and saw that either one could work but in the end I decided that the second design was stronger. I then wanted to see if multiple bottles were more effective than one but I realized that the single bitten bottle was the best choice for the design.
