Objective
The objective of the project was to create a movie poster and some SWAG items for a small-time movie production company so they could showcase it at a movie festival. The client wanted a movie poster that helped to promote their new movie by only showing an environmental shot that would be used to promote the movie. The client’s movie was called The Virus and they strongly felt that the movie would be best promoted with a post apocalyptic environment scene to draw the viewer into seeing the movie.
Process
To begin the project I looked at a bunch of similar movie posters to get inspiration and to see what others had done with the similar subject matter. I then sketched out ideas for a wordmark and came up with plenty of ideas. I knew that I wanted the wordmark to be special and tie into the subject of the poster. I sketched out some simple thumbnail ideas of what the layout and content of the poster could look like. A challenge was finding a place to start and by sketching out some simple ideas this helped to see what direction I could go in.
The next part of the design process was gathering a bunch of imagery I wanted to include in the poster as I would be photobashing the scene from scratch. I went to free stock photo websites like Pexelbay and UnSplash and gathered appropriate imagery to build out a city street. The problem when first starting to design the poster was making sure all the components were on the same angle and looked correct. I solved this by playing with the layout of components and using tools like perspective warp. When photobashing the important thing was for me to determine a light source and make all components match the light source. A constant challenge was making everything look like it belonged together in the scene and not out of place. The techniques I used to accomplish this were blending modes, brushes, exposure layers, masking, blurring, hue and saturation layers, different warping tools and painting.
In the final poster design I eliminated a lot of things from my earlier concepts. In my early concepts I wanted to show people walking through the street, a tent in the foreground along with a rabid racoon. I kept these out of the final design because there would be too much going on at once. The final design is the stronger outcome because it allows the viewer to take in the full environment without distractions. The final poster works because it allows the viewer to fully immerse themselves into this post apocalyptic world that is being shown which leads to them wanting to see the movie.
